Stewardship Team Year-End Wrap-Up

by Morgan Anderson, CMC Stewardship Team

With the arrival of chilly weather this autumn, the 2016 season is coming to a close for the Conservation Department’s Stewardship Team. Each member will be moving on to further their professional interests in conservation and sustainability across the state of Colorado and around the globe.

File_004Throughout the season, the Stewardship Team had the opportunity to lead projects in trail maintenance, construction, and restoration. Many long days were filled crosscutting in the Raggeds Wilderness and San Isabel National Forest, monitoring trail conditions on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, building dams in the Rio Grande Natural Area, gathering trail-use data for the Salida Ranger District, and installing post-and-cable fencing in Badger Flats to close off unsustainable roads.

Volunteers were able to contribute roughly 400 hours of service to their public lands statewide (worth $9,424) with the leadership of the Stewardship Team and the partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, and other non-profits. Without the support of our statewide public land agencies and Coloradans the success of this season would not be possible.

The Conservation Department intends to develop the Stewardship Team next year to include more young professionals interested in hands-on involvement in conservation statewide. This program strives to become an indispensable asset to the BLM and Forest Service, while still remaining mostly grant-funded.

File_003We wanted to thank those involved in the success of the Stewardship Team, including Colorado Mountain Club staff and members and those interested in lending a hand to improve our public lands by volunteering.

Make sure to check out next year’s volunteer opportunities with the Stewardship Team.
