Youth Education Program Receives Climbing Shoes from Sole Purpose

GOLDEN, COLO.  –  The Colorado Mountain Club’s Youth Education Program has received a donation of more than 100 shoes from Sole Purpose, a program that connects outdoor-oriented nonprofits with climbing gyms to benefit underprivileged children.

The Youth Education Program is proud to be Sole Purpose’s first and lead partner. Sole Purpose, a new initiative created by Boulder-based climbing wall manufacturer Eldorado Climbing Walls, collects lost or donated climbing shoes from climbing gyms. The shoes are then donated to select nonprofits that teach rock climbing to children.

The recent donation to CMC comes from the Boulder Rock Club, one of the Front Range’s leading indoor climbing facilities. The shoes will be used in many of the Youth Education Program’s offerings, including school, group and Adventure Courses.

“The donation of these shoes allows the Youth Education Program to provide high-quality climbing experiences to youth from all over the Front Range,” YEP Director Holly Barrass said. “Using real rock-climbing shoes in our programs creates a more authentic experience for youth learning to climb.”

More than 7,000 children per year benefit from CMC Youth Education Program activities. YEP brings the mountains to students year-round through camps, field trips and day programs that teach mountain weather, avalanche science, high-altitude physiology, conservation, the science of rock climbing and more. In addition to an indoor climbing wall at the American Mountaineering Center and several local outdoor crags, YEP also utilizes the newly acquired Bouldering Bus for its climbing-focused programs.
